Mary McElroy S.D.C.R.G
Mary started her dance journey at a very young age with Marie Walsh school in Dublin. Mary was her first champion dancer. Mary then started to teach in the class and thoroughly enjoyed it. She continued dancing for Marie for many years. With Mary’s mother dying when she was 15, dancing was where she was most happiest.
She qualified as a teacher in 1967 and went on to become an A.D.C.R.G in 1977. Mary also has her B.G and S.D.C.R.G. They produced many Leinster, All Ireland and World champions including Antony Mullen, Margaret Mullen, Maria Wogan, Imelda Florence and Dr Mairtin Brennan. Marie died in 1984. Mary then started a new chapter in her life by opening her own school which proved to be very successful at all levels. Recently having an All Ireland champion and winning two globes at the Worlds.
Since the early 70’s, her career has taken her all over the world teaching solo dance in the U.S, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Russia and Poland. For many years Mary has conducted T.C nd A.D examination workshops throughout the World. Hundreds of teachers and adjudicators from all over the world have been helped by Mary to pass their exam. From 1971, Mary has worked as stage steward at the All Ireland and World Championships where she also narrated the figure dancing and dance dramas.
Mary has been a member of the Leinster council since it’s inception in 1970, holding many executive positions and is now Vice President in Leinster. She was nominated to An Coimisiun in 1984. She held position as chairperson of An Rince + Ceol and at present is a member of the Udaras committee.
Mary has received a Gradam award and is honoured to be holding position as Vice President of An Coimisiun. Mary’s latest claim to fame is rewriting An Rince Ceili (ceili book). She’s in the Autumn of her life and her life in Irish dancing continues to be wonderful.
